Significant events in Black history in Canada

Since 1996, the Government of Canada’s annual Black History Month campaign encourages all Canadians to learn more about Black history in Canada. Below are highlights of significant events that have contributed to the story of Black communities in Canada, and the impact that they have made to all parts of society well before the land we live on was even called Canada. People depend on public services; services depend on people to deliver them!

Municipal workers touch every part of life: they fix roads, provide emergency care, test drinking water, connect us with library resources, run ice rinks, work at daycare, lead community workshops, and much more. We’re facing challenging economic times when we need affordable, reliable public services most.

CUPE BC Committee Appointment: 2023-2025 Term

Lisa Turpin, our Secretary-Treasurer, has been selected for representation to the CUPE BC Persons with Disability Committee.  Lisa suffered a rollover motor vehicle accident over 10 years ago that ‘gifted’ her with a spinal cord disability and chronic pain.  She was eager to put her name forward to lend a voice to members who face adversity.  She is honoured to have been selected for this important committee.

Congratulations Lisa!

Burnaby Settlement February 13, 2023

CUPE 23 inside and outside workers, as well as foremen, at the City of Burnaby, have voted 75% in favour of ratifying a new three-year agreement. The three-year deal provides wage increases of 3% in 2022, 4.5% in 2023, and 4% in 2024. It includes a one-time, 3.5% inflationary support supplemental payment on 2022 wages.

CUPE 23 represents 3,200 municipal and library workers who provide quality public services to Burnaby residents including public works, library services, recreation, planning, RCMP, fire support services, as well as administrative services such as accounting and payroll.

Every day CUPE members provide countless services that make our communities a great place to work and live.

Our campaign is going to highlight this fact through a number of tactics, including a campaign video featuring the very work we do. Here is the current CUPE public information campaign video:
